Atlanta Metro Food & Farm Network has been retained to provide an assessment of the current and potential range of urban agriculture activity within the Choice Neighborhoods Atlanta (CNA) geographic footprint.
This footprint covers portions of NPU – T and NPU – L, specifically Scholars Landing (on the site of the former University Homes), College Town and the surrounding Atlanta neighborhoods of Ashview Heights, Atlanta University Center, Booker T. Washington, Just Us Neighbors, and Vine City.
This Community Food Assessment project will involve identifying existing and potential home and urban agriculture sites. We will be interviewing individuals at home and through civic groups and community organizations to capture the data regarding the history, status, and aspirations of functioning gardens or farms.
The effort will culminate with a day long “Sustainable Neighborhood Visioning Workshop” (community charette) scheduled for August 18th beginning at 8:30 am, The findings will be compiled in a summary report and presented to the community in September.
Choice Neighborhoods (CN) is a United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) initiative that focuses on transforming the distressed housing and neighborhoods as a whole, into a healthy, sustainable community where families have access to quality housing, schools, neighborhoods, transportation, and services.
The Atlanta Housing Authority (AHA) is using the CN planning grant funds to develop a neighborhood transformation plan in collaboration with our many stakeholders that will be the basis of future grant opportunities. The Neighborhood Transformation Plan draft is due for submission to HUD in December 2012.
